For the winter holiday we sought the (relative) warmth of neighboring Italy. We were every day enchanted by this country so rich in history, culture, architecture, tradition, art, food and human nature. We were also amazed at (though not surprised by) the immense presence of tourism. Anywhere one might stop to admire a scene, there stands a vendor selling knock-off couture or "selfie sticks." In countless winding streets so inundated with boutiques and fashionable tourists, one must eventually turn eyes toward the sky, toward the intricately turned lightposts and terraces, just to remember why one made the voyage. Despite such material supply and demand, the magic of these ancient cities persists and defines the environment.
With time, some cash and a camera we backpacked from Venice to Rome to explore these milestones of human civilization and to gain a lil' perspective on our own. To properly exhibit our travels (and to keep my browser from crashing), I will break these posts up according to city.
We will begin with Venice, the most enchanting place of all.

Wandering this labyrinthine city by day and night we embraced the notion of getting lost. At every turn, another canal, gondola, clothesline, masque maker, vendor of furry hats. As we became familiar with the layout of the island, our landmarks were less connected to street names and rivers than to cathedrals, shoppes, sculptures and graffiti.
